This Check List assumes you have already made the firm decision to apply to law school after a thorough investigation of the law, legal careers and the financial implications/consequences. If you have not already read the section of my website entitled, “Should I go to law school?” then you should do that first.
The LSAT
- Decide how you will prepare for the LSAT (Jan – Mar 2012)
- Prepare, study, practice! (Spring or Summer 2012)
- Register for LSAT (by early May or early September 2012) – earlier registration means more choices of test centers
- Take the test (June or October 2012)
Recommendations
- Identify possible recommenders (Spring 2012)
- Talk with recommenders to confirm (Spring 2012)
- Confirm recommenders’ Fall 2010 location (Spring 2012)
- Give LSAC recommendation forms to recommenders (September 2012)
Transcripts
- Request two sets of transcripts from UMass registrar – one to be sent immediately and the second after Fall 2011 grades are in (September 2012)
- Request transcripts from other undergraduate institutions attended (September 2012)
Applications
- Start exploring schools through ABA/LSAC guide (Spring 2012)
- Register for LSAC Credentials Assembly Service (No later than September 2012)
- Draft personal statement(s) (September – October 2012)
- Spruce up resume (September -October 2012)
- Complete and submit online applications (by Thanksgiving 2012, earlier if possible)
Dean’s Letters
- Request Dean’s certification letters for all schools that require them (October 2012)
Financial Aid
- Fill out each school’s financial aid application (with online applications, or in January 2013, depending on school’s procedure)
- Complete the FAFSA online (January 2013)
Final Steps
- Do a lot of waiting (Spring 2013)
- Weigh admission and scholarship offers (April – May 2013)
- Make final choice (May 2013)
- Pay seat deposit (May 2013)
